RA taps into the hustle that's helping a legendary scene roar back...

'Not too long ago it looked like New York's glory days as a center for dance music had passed. As the birthplace of disco and hip-hop and the home of legendary nightclubs like the Paradise Garage, Limelight and Twilo, the city has long been part of the cultural fabric. But as the notoriously grimy city of the late 20th century transformed into the sleek and hyper-gentrified metropolis of today, its thriving underground lost its foothold.

New Yorkers have long flourished under adversity, though, and its now bustling party scene is a testament to this. Promoters, producers and DJs jumped the East River to establish Brooklyn as a new creative center. Lofts and warehouses filled the void left by Manhattan's shuttered nightclubs, and a new generation of producers is infusing the city's musical legacy with the sounds of the international scene. But the luxury condos rising along the waterfront are a constant reminder that the city's relentless evolution could easily stamp things out again. We burrowed deep for our latest Real Scenes film, discovering how some of the key players in this vast scene are hustling hard to make it last.'

Yet another gem from Resident Advisor. I really enjoy these segments as it really gives an insight into what's going on within electronic music across the world. When you live in a city you usually just focus on what's going on around you. So it's refreshing to see it from another viewpoint, especially when Dublin is where you call home. ;)

ANDY STOTT BIO
Andy Stott is a DJ and producer from Manchester. Since his debut Replace EP in 2005, he has released four full-length albums, five more EPs, and several singles. Drawing inspiration from the usual dub techno suspects and fusing them with minimalist ideals and bathwater-warm melodies and textures, Stott’s tracks offer a deep home listening experience, as well as the requisite punch to make club floors move. Blessed with an ear for space and a knack for constructing tracks that are simultaneously smooth and rumbling, Stott neatly strides the axis between intelligent techno, dub techno and dubstep.

FORWARD STRATEGY GROUP BIO
Leeds & Edinburgh based duo Forward Strategy Group formed in 2008, and are seen as one of the most unique acts in techno today. Their lo-fi approach to modern techno & attention to textural detail has been one of the key inspirations for the new wave of industrial techno musicians.

Patrick Walker is resident and co-promoter of Unseen in Edinburgh, bringing the finest acts in modern techno to the capital. Smear has been resident at Leeds' legendary Detatched & Future-Past club nights in for the past 3 years.

FSG's work on their own label, and labels like Perc Trax and Stroboscopic Artefacts, not to mention their in-demand remix work for Zooloft, Bas Mooy, Perc & Justin Berkovi among others, has seen their records firmly planted at the front of many DJ's bags. Their new album Labour Division, their most diverse & accomplished work to date, has already garnered huge critical acclaim.

Their turbulent live shows have earned them cult status in techno clubs throughout Europe & beyond, and their marathon DJ sets incorporate house, industrial, synthpop and experimental music, all woven seamlessly into their trademark sound.

CUT HANDS BIO
Bennett founded Whitehouse in 1980, with a mind to creating "the most extreme music ever recorded". They succeeded. The group remained at the forefront of the experimental and noise scenes over the next 27 years, invariably creating controversy and stimulating debate with their choice of violent and sexual subject matter, before eventually disbanding in 2007. A specialist in linguistics and unconscious communication, Bennett now helms the mass hypnosis experimental project, Extralinguistic Sequencing, which premiered at Tate Britain in 2010. For Cut Hands, rhythm is his chosen weapon; on recently released album Afro Noise I - eight years in the making - he utilises vaudou and Central African percussion in radical new ways, generating a sound unrivalled in its physical intensity.

RA travels to Bristol for the next instalment in our new short film series. The idea behind RA's new film series, Three Cuts, couldn't be more simple. We ask an artist to play us three of their tracks: an early production, a key release and an upcoming selection.

The next edition of Three Cuts poses an interesting question: as an electronic music artist, what do you do when the phone stops ringing? It's something Laurie Osborne has been thinking about a lot of late. The success he enjoyed by running two highly respected labels—Skull Disco and Apple Pips—and producing music allowed him to DJ all over the world, enjoying the comforts (and trappings) that the lifestyle affords. But things have been more quiet recently. Osborne only released one 12-inch in the last couple of years and, all of a sudden, his bookings dropped off. It was time to reassess. As he looked forward to getting back in the studio and "starting again," Osborne charted this journey with his Three Cuts selection when we paid him a visit at his studio in Bristol.

RA are back with yet another video, this time in the Three Cuts series... I personally love the idea of Three Cuts as it gets an artist to choose three tracks and give a bit more of an insight into them. Appleblim is one of the first Dubstep producers I ever listened to. His track 'Vansan' is one of my all-time favourites, and it's a rare thing for me to ever remember songs at the rate I refresh my iTunes recently added list.

[ Between the Beats: Nina Kraviz ]

In celebration of all things controversial, I'm starting off with a post relating to Nina Kraviz. For those of you who may not have seen the RA: Between the Beats feature on one of Techno's current leading ladies, Nina Kraviz, Then I suggest you check it out here;

Having watched the feature I was left with mixed emotions. This is not the first feature I have watched on Nina Kraviz, she was in fact also interviewed for the Slices DVD feature back in August 2012, which you can watch here;

If you've taken the time to watch both of these you'll notice a recurring theme, sexuality.

While I was left feeling somewhat bored by the constant close-ups and candid shots, I did enjoy most of what Nina has to say as an emerging female presence in the electronic music industry.
